Syrtaki is a dance that got out from a movie back in 1964. The movie got a lot of Oscars. That movie script came after a novel. Nikos Kazantzakis' novel "Alexis Zorbas".
The movie director was Michael Cacoyannis. The Syrtaki dancer was the actor Anthony Quinn playing Greek character Alexis Zorbas. Alexis Zorbas was having a boss, an intelectual half-Greek half-English man played by Alan Bates.

So what is that fuzz about Syrtaki dance and melody written for this movie by Mikis Theodorakis? Why a movie left such an impact for so many years? (47y until now)

Litterateur Nikos Kazantzakis was a master of psychographics. He set here a bipolar between two characters and the society around them in Crete, Greece. Ok and what is the point on that?
Remember, in this blog you are trying to understand what Greece, I mean what Greeks, really are thus what they give to other people or stand for.
Just follow the video clips path bellow.
Most of you will recognize the hidden Greek deep inside you. Whether you are from North Pole or Europe or Asia or America or Africa or Australia or wherever. Once, everyone of you were a kid, right?
It is the tale of a young Greek intellectual who ventures to escape his bookish life with the aid of the boisterous and mysterious Alexis Zorba. The novel was adapted into a successful 1964 film of the same name as well as a 1968 musical, Zorba. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorba_the_Greek Nikos Kazantzakis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikos_Kazantzakis http://grecja.home.pl/eng/ekazantzakis.htm http://www.historical-museum.gr/kazantzakis/index1.html The meaning of the words, art, love, beauty, purity, passion, all this was made clear to me by the simplest of human words uttered by this workman. We must both have been hungry because we constantly led the conversation round to food. "What is your favorite dish, grandad?" "All of them, my son. It's a great sin to say this is good and that is bad." "Why? Can't we make a choice?" "No, of course we can't." "Why not?" "Because there are people who are hungry." I was silent, ashamed. My heart had never been able to reach that height of nobility and compassion. The aim of man and matter is to create joy, according to Zorba others would say to create spirit, but that comes to the same thing on another plane. But why? With what object? And when the body dissolves, does anything at all remain of what we have called the soul? Or does nothing remain, and does our unquenchable desire for immortality spring, not from the fact that we are immortal, but from the fact that during the short span of our life we are in the service of something immortal?" "... the highest point a man can attain is not Knowledge, or Virtue, or Goodness, or Victory, but something even greater, more heroic and more despairing: Sacred Awe! How simple a thing is happiness: a glass of wine, a roast chestnut, a wretched little brazier, the sound of the sea. All that is required to feel that here and now is happiness is a simple heart.
Well. Except you were a kid once -like Zorba was a kid all life long- there is one more thing about Syrtaki frenzy. Kazantzakis is constantly playing between life and death, something and nothing, the new and the old, the gay and the serious, the wannabe good and the wannabe bad, the human and the brute instinct, the light and the dark, leaving reader without an answer. This is Kazantzakis pattern or tempo in most of his books.

Maybe Kazantzakis believes there is not an answer at all but an animal called human. Then, having not an answer he is like putting a question such: "what this passing lie we call life is all about anyway?" and throws Zorba on the table:

"A man needs a little madness or else he never dares cut the rope and be free"

That is the meaning of Syrtaki dance and tune. That is what all of these people around the world want to burst out by performing Syrtaki when dancing like kids in dance halls, in tourist tavernas, in bars, even in serious music halls. Then what of that has to do with Greeks? The life of a Greek always has to do with life and death, even when he is not aware of that.
Even a Greek who never attended school, never heard of ancient Greeks or comedy or tragedy, he constantly drifts and plays between life and death issues and decisions. How come? They say this is in the seasons’ rotation in Greece. This is in the nature’s blossom in Spring against loneliness in Winter. This is in Byzantine hymns in church against passionate bouzouki. This is in the hard ouzo or raki or tsipouro, while almost anyone drinks and no one gets drunk. Not for Greeks can drink a lot without getting drunk. Many other people can drink more than Greeks. This is because a Greek, while never told or taught to, does not want to get drunk but only when the sun has set and he has issues about. In the same way, no one knows how it has passed through all, every Greek thinks: "A man needs a little madness or else he never dares cut the rope and be free".

Maybe these aspects are spread in common among Greeks because of the soil of this wild land. I am kidding you, I don’t know. Who knows. Who cares.
Bouzoukia is the plural, meaning something else.

"Bouzoukia" is the plural of bouzouki organ, in modern Greece meaning places where small orchestras have (one or more) bouzouki as the main organ.
The whole culture around that places and songs and fest are also called "Bouzoukia".
Sometimes in a high passion meaning, sometimes in a decadence meaning of low music aesthetics. Be ware of the latter when you are a tourist so consult someone in advance before to attend a "bouzoukia" place. The quality varies. The most frequent issue is the audio volume level, it can be too loud to tolerate.
If you are against then it would be better for you to go to a tavern (taverna) wherever are some folks playing bouzouki and singing (not in all tavernas). That could be a more traditional experience and more appropriate to meet the right culture of bouzouki (also for tavernas consult someone to point you out).

Bouzouki itself is a spectacular organ having used to accompany superb music or songs or dances. The keys are always two major factors. The melody and the bouzouki player. These two, along with a good singer depending on the music piece, lead to the high interpretation of a passion (or strong passion).

Last but not least to know, folks who go to "bouzoukia" are not from a specific social class. They could be farmers, workers, clerks, politicians, shipowners, whoever.
There is another issue here. In many cases (not always) anyone of them want to feel like "lord". That means a worker would spent two month's hard earned budget in just one night in "bouzoukia" to feel "arhontas" (lord), and to exhibit to others that he is a lord. His intention is not to fake others that he is a lord but that he behaves like a lord in front of others whatever the personal cost to him (one of the major key-issues to understand Greeks).

___
The singer here sings: "All I see are dark and tangled. As if they found me all of the disasters. (then mentions a bad love affair on top of that all, and then:) I'll run up to destroy, what have confused my life, to finally get a breath."
The last minute of that video clip demonstrates a lot about the most inner meaning of a Greek feeling and behaving like a lord with a common variation of that behavior, the destructive one in front of a mistreated life's experience. Off course you have to watch all of the clip to get the point.

OLA EINAI DROMOS - Zebekiko
The Byzantine music is the direct descendant of ancient Greek music.
The most difference between them is mainly for the Byzantine music is used for religion purposes -Greek Orthodox Church or just Orthodox Church- thus focused and kept specific aspects from ancient Greek music such as Epic, Iambic, and Tribute chanting. The rhythm the melody the tone and the language remained unchanged and are just the same.
Listening to some particular pieces of Byzantine music you have a good sample of how Homer was singing.
Agni Parthene (Αγνή Παρθένε) is a liturgical hymn composed by St. Nectarios of Aegina, drawn from the Theotokarion (Book of Hymns to the Mother of God).

Sometimes performed in Orthodox churches at the beginning of Vespers.

Refrain: O Rejoice Bride unwedded.

O Virgin pure, immaculate, O Lady Theotokos. (Refrain)
O fleece bedewed with every grace. O Virgin Queen and Mother.(Refrain)
More radiant than the rays of the sun, and higher than the heavens. (Refrain)
O joy of virgin choruses, superior to the angels. (Refrain)
O brighter than the firmament and purer that the sun's light. (Refrain)
More holy than the multitude of all the heavenly armies. (Refrain)

O ever virgin Mary of all the world, the Lady.(Refrain)
O Bride all pure immaculate, O Lady Panagia. (Refrain)
O Mary Bride and Queen of all, the cause of our rejoicing. (Refrain)
O noble Maiden, gracious Queen,
supremely holy Mother. (Refrain)
More honored than the Cherubim,
beyond compare more glorious(Refrain)
Than the unbodied Seraphim, transcending the angelic Thrones. (Refrain)

Rejoice, the song of Cherubim rejoice,
the hymn of angels
Rejoice the ode of Seraphim; the joy of the archangels.
Rejoice, O peace and happiness and cause of our rejoicing.
O sacred chamber of the Word, the flower of incorruption.
Rejoice, delightful Paradise of blessed life eternal.
Rejoice O sacred Tree of life and fount of immortality.

I supplicate you, Lady now, I fervently entreat you.
O Queen of all, I earnestly implore and seek your favor.
O gracious Maiden, spotless one, O Lady Panagia.
I call upon you ardently, O holy hallowed Temple.
O help me and deliver me protect me rom the enemy.
Agni Parthene is a non-liturgical hymn composed in Greek by St. Nectarios of Aegina in the 19th century during his tenure as director of the Rizarios Theological School of Athens. St. Nektarios liked to compose hymns in honor of the Mother of God to deepen his personal prayer and relationship with her. The tradition passed down at the monastery of St. Nektarios, in Aegina, Greece, is that the Lady herself appeared before him and requested that he record on paper a particular hymn the angelic choirs were about to sing. This hymn was the "Agni Parthene". The original script can still be viewed on his prayer table in his bedroom at this monastery.

The original melody to this hymn was composed by an Athonite hymnographer who is said to also have had a vision of the Virgin Mary prior to composing the work. The recording of this melody by the Monks of Simonopetra has contributed significantly to the popularization of the hymn.

Due to its popularity, the hymn has been translated into many langauges and the original melody has been adapted to suit the particular style of church chanting. One such variation is the Valaam Monastery chant of the Russian translation.

The hymn of the Pure Virgin is part of A Small Theotokarion (Athens, 1905) a book of Hymns to the Mother of God, written by St. Nektarios.

This hymn has been used during communion in the Liturgy and it is sometimes chanted at the beginning of Vespers.

- Gorge crossing only by foot. There are not any roads in or along the sides.
- Climbing skills not needed.
- In the gorge distance plus getting in and out distance, total on foot 16km (10mi). People usually tell that is 18km (11mi) of the long time that rough terrain takes for crossing out.
- Total time for walk plus rest times is approximately 6-7 hours.

- Wear shoes with hard and non-skid soles. That is imperative due to the specific terrain.
- Very hot between 20 of July until 5 of September, with peak at mid August, a straw hat is recommended (better than a cotton or nylon one here).
Sun glasses are recommended for the light is very bright along the day.
Sunscreens as light fabrics and creams (not oils) of high protection grade are highly recommended for any uncovered part of the body. Be careful not only of the direct sunlight but even the indirect one (i.e. shaded parts of the face).
If you plan to swim at Aghia Roumeli have your towel with you.
- There are many water supply points along the route. Just have a bottle to refill.
- There are restaurants at both ends of the gorge but it is good to also have a snack with you (long walk time).
- For having the full experience of what you see and what you are crossing by study a guide before getting there, it worths every minute of such preparation. While there prefer to stop and watch than walking and watching around at the same time due to the roughness of the ground. The interests are many, about history, geology, flora and fauna, all of these in this gorge.

- Entry point: Xyloskalo at Omalos plateau 1227m (3950ft). Exit point: at sea level Aghia Roumeli.
- There is public transportation to Xyloskalo.
- Transportation back from Aghia Roumeli, only by sea. For same day return you have to catch ferry until the one that departs at 5:30pm (check for current information when planning). Ferries connect Aghia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion (the most preferable connection for Chania or Rethymno), and Aghia Roumeli to Sougia.
- You can also cross the gorge in reverse order, but it is not recommended to average walkers for an all the way up hiking.

- Entrance to the gorge is permitted between the months of May and October, though the exact period is determined by prevailing weather conditions, from 6.00 am to 4.00 pm.
The year visits are between 130,000 to 250,000. That peaked to 300,000 at the years 1990 through 1994. The normal day visits average between 500-1500 at high in season July-August-September and low in October.
